P.A.W.S.
Basic Obedience course consists of 7 basic lessons under most circumstances.
These lessons are usually done one lesson per week but can be
done every 2 weeks to fit the needs of the client. Not all dogs progress and
learn at the same speed but we have found that most dogs are very capable of
going from ground zero to a good start towards off-leash control in this short
time frame without the need for lengthy, expensive, and ongoing instruction.
Results can, and should be, expected from the first lesson with improvement
each week. Lessons are constructed so that the trainer introduces the dog to
new material each lesson and then puts the owner in the "driver's
seat". The maximum benefits arise for the pet owner when the owner learns
the techniques and the pet learns to respect and comply with the owner's
commands. It is then the owners' responsibility to practice the lesson to gain
proficiency for themselves and for their pets.

Lesson
1.
Dog Psychology class
(without dog)
Lesson
2.
Leashbreaking and Automatic
Sit; Teaches the dog to walk calmly on leash and sit when the owner comes to a
stop.
Lesson 3.
Sit Stays, and Down Stays; Motionless commands.
Lesson
4.
A down from
the front and return to sit from the front; This is the ability to get in front
of the dog at a 6 foot distance and have the dog go down in place and then
return to sit in place.
Lesson 5.
The Come, and the Finish; The finish simply means return to heel
position.
Lesson
6. Long Line (typically a 30 foot leash); Here the dog learns everything
works the same, if you are at either 6 feet or 30 feet away from your dog. Here
we also start our off-leash transition by dropping the leash and getting it out
of our hands.
Lesson
7.
Sit in
Motion and a Down in Motion; This seals the dog's obedience Like a
typewriter, you hit a key and it comes up on paper with no thought processes in
the middle, i.e. "should I have to, will I have to, did I have to last
time, or will I have to next time?" |
